She explained that language used by the maternal and child health community is too medicalised and complex to engage with the public. For real mobilisation and political change to occur, messaging needs to be simple and edgy.

The Women and Children First workshop entitled Harnessing UK Expertise in Maternal, Newborn and Child Health to Achieve MDGs 4 and 5, was held on 6th March, 2008 at Church House in London. It brought together the Undersecretary of State for International Development, Gillian Merron, leading civil society activists, medical practitioners and DFID officials to discuss ways to generate political change and public awareness on the issue of maternal and child health.
